The Mo Lum of San Francisco Chinatown: Preserving a Martial Arts Legacy

“The Mo Lum of San Francisco Chinatown” (武林) literally translates as “The Martial Forest of San Francisco Chinatown.”

The phrase symbolizes the network of schools, associations, and the broader community of Gung Fu Clubs in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

In the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, martial arts is more than combat—it is culture, identity, and resilience. The Mo Lum of San Francisco Chinatown is a documentary that explores the rich and largely untold history of traditional Chinese martial arts—Gung Fu—in this vibrant community. Through intimate interviews with masters who trained under legendary teachers of the mid-20th century, the film uncovers the personal, cultural, and spiritual journey of preserving a centuries-old tradition in a rapidly changing world.

San Francisco’s Chinatown was the birthplace of traditional Gung Fu in America. Pioneering Sifu’s such as Lau Bun and T.Y. Wong laid the foundation for a thriving martial arts lineage. Above storefronts, in hidden alleys and quiet training halls, they cultivated discipline, camaraderie, and cultural pride. Decades later, their students—many now masters themselves—share the stories of their Sifu’s, the styles they pursued, and how the teachings shaped their lives.

Martial arts in Chinatown has always been about more than fighting. Festivals, parades, and lion dances turned martial skill into vibrant cultural expression. Opera clubs, tongs, youth groups, and family associations served as hubs where martial arts intertwined with tradition, community, and identity. By the 1930s, these practices began moving into public schools, making Gung Fu accessible beyond private groups and firmly establishing it as a cornerstone of Chinese-American heritage.

The masters reveal the philosophy behind the forms, the discipline in each stance, and the resilience required to preserve a tradition facing modern distractions. They reflect on memories of Chinatown’s streets, the camaraderie of the martial arts community, and the significance of lion dances and community gatherings. The Mo Lum of San Francisco Chinatown is a story of lineage, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of Chinatown’s martial soul.

For Leo Gong, filmmaker, photographer, and martial artist, this project is deeply personal. His first encounter with martial arts came as a child during Chinese New Year festivities, an experience that ignited a lifelong passion. As the early history of Gung Fu in America risks fading from memory, Leo felt a calling: to document the living masters and preserve their legacy. Through his lens, he seeks to share their journeys, philosophies, and contributions with future generations, ensuring the spirit of martial arts continues to inspire.
